Post-16 GCSE English and Maths Resits

This project is developing CPD and pedagogical approaches for teaching GCSE English and maths resits for all post 16 settings in the city and thereby improving outcomes. The project is developing and delivering:

  • differentiated pedagogical approaches to support learners on both vocational and academic study programmes and at different levels of study;
  • a programme of differentiated professional staff development;
  • and resources for teachers, lecturers and tutors to target Level 1, 2 and 3 learners that also include functional skills.

Sixth Form College/ Cabinet Office Project

A pilot collaborative project between the 6th Form College and the Cabinet Office Behavioural Insights Team, focused on building social support for enrolled students. The project is a software based approach linked to the GCSE resits project, whereby 100 resit students have a virtual college-based student mentor that provides peer support. If the project works, it will be embedded across the college and shared with other post 16 settings in the city.

Employers into Primary Schools

This project will deliver curriculum-based employer engagement, engaging with all primary schools in the city to open up new possibilities of learning, and to engage children at the foundation learning stage with the world of work and careers, so that pupils can understand the connection between the skills they are learning at school and the wider world of work.

Post-16 Risk of NEET Index

This project has established and is implementing a common framework for a Post 16 Risk of NEET Index which will be used to track individual students within each Post 16 organisation. This information will be used at regular key points within the year to assess the impact of actions and interventions taken with an individual student to reduce the likelihood of becoming NEET. It will also enable monitoring and reporting on the impact of interventions across the institutions and introduce a post 16 ‘Managed Transfers Framework’ which would support young people in moving between providers across the city thus reducing the likelihood of becoming long- term NEET. This matches the Transition Framework that has been developed for primary-secondary transition.

High Ability Students

This project has created a city high-achievers group for those who are not right at the top (the HE+ cohort) of post 16, but who achieved grade 6s and some 7s at GCSE typically – mimicking some of the style of HE+ programme – and which will then form an academic community of potential talent which together can support each other with high aspirations and achievement. The project involves NCOP and Oxford University and has a focus on disadvantaged students.

Learner with Multiple Barriers

The project aims to develop a person-centred model to support 16-18 year old learners with multiple barriers to learning through the development of a casework model.  The focus of the project was supporting learners within vocational settings in the city who were identified to have multiple barriers to learning which impacted on their ability to participate prior attainment and risk their disengagement with learning. These barriers typically include, mental health conditions, insecure housing, caring responsibilities, risks associated with gang related activities and poor parenting.

Social, Emotional & Mental Health pilot in FE

This will be a targeted pilot – deploying SEMH support into Further Education, focusing on preventative work and will also include a focus within this pilot around the mental health of parents within the 16-19 cohort.

Special School Employer Engagement

A curriculum-based employer engagement project, working with Special Schools to open up new possibilities of learning and to connect young people in Special Schools with the world of work and careers both within school and with an appropriate range of employers who can meet their needs.
